What To Look For With Your Roofing After A Severe Thunderstorm

When you are in a severe thunderstorm, your first concern has to be the safety of you and your family. However, after the storm has passed and you get a chance to breathe again, the focus needs to be on your home and any damage that may have been done. One area of main concern after a severe thunderstorm is your roofing. Get to know some of the things to look for with your roofing after a severe thunderstorm. Then, you can be sure that you get any roofing repairs or replacements done as soon as possible after the big storm.

Look for Debris on Your Roof

One of the biggest issues following a severe thunderstorm is debris on the roof. Once everything is dry enough to safely get on your roof, head up there and look for and clear any debris from the surface of your roof.

The longer debris sits up there, the more damage it can do to your roof. It can scrape the granules off your shingles, cause moss and mold, and more. So, be sure you carefully remove debris. Do not drag it across the surface of your roof if at all possible. And if the debris is too big, contact a roofing contractor and/or tree services company to come and remove the debris for you.

Look for Missing Shingles

Look around your yard and landscaping. Do you notice any shingles in the yard? If so, then you likely have a roofing problem that needs to be fixed right away. Get up on your roof and find where the shingles are missing. if you have less than a quarter of your shingles missing, then simply repairing the roof by replacing those individual shingles may be the solution. If more than that are missing, it may be more cost-effective to just replace the roof in its entirety.

Look for Cracks in Your Shingles

Another issue to watch out for after a severe thunderstorm is cracks in your shingles. Even if there isn't a lot of debris on your roof, it doesn't mean that debris did not hit your roof during the storm.

This impact of falling branches or even branches scraping the roof can cause cracks in the shingles. Cracked shingles will allow moisture to get down underneath the surface of the roof, causing potentially extensive damage to your roofing structure. These shingles should be replaced as soon as possible.

Look for Sagging in Your Roof

Sagging in your roof is indicative of water damage and can occur after a severe thunderstorm with heavy rains. Watch for areas of sagging and contact a roofing contractor right away if you notice this issue. You do not want this sagging to progress to a full-on leak in your roof.
